The Birth Parent Services Program offers information and counseling to birth parents
(married or single) to assist in planning for their child. All options open
to the parent(s) are impartially explored, including:
- Parenting the child
- Government adoption
- Private placements through licensed agencies
- Direct private adoptions
Eligibility
This program is open to birth parents who wish to explore options for
their family and their child.
Getting Started
Contact the Birth Parent Services Program at
(403) 297-6038.
A worker will arrange a meeting to review all of your options, helping
you reach a decision that will be best for you and your family.
Next Steps
Counselling is suggested and available for birth parents throughout their decision-making
process. The focus in counseling may include prenatal care, accommodation,
financial assistance, the relationship with the birth father, parents and other
family members, prevention of future untimely pregnancies, parenting skills,
support and grief/separation/loss issues.
If the parent(s) chooses an adoption plan, whether government or private, a
worker is involved in the completion of legal documents and ensuring
the parent(s) fully understands their rights. When a parent remains undecided
after the birth, a Custody Agreement may be offered which entails the child
being cared for temporarily in an approved foster home, allowing the parent
further time for decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are the legal rights of the birth
father?
A: The legal status of the birth father is
dependent upon his marital status with the birth mother, or the duration of
a common-law relationship. The Domestic Relations Act is our guide in determining
legal status of birth fathers. Generally, the birth father has a right to be
notified of an existing adoption plan, of an adoption hearing and to be made
aware of services available to him such as counseling, the Post Adoption Registry
and Licensed Search Agencies.
Q: Am I entitled to my own legal representation?
A: Yes, this is optional. The parties responsible
for paying these services depend on the type of adoption you plan for your child.
Q: May I select a family on a private basis
without going through an agency or the government?
A: You may choose any family you wish to raise
your child. Usually this will be a family member, a friend or someone recommended
to you. However, there are precautions and procedures you should be aware of,
and there are legislative and policy requirements that must be met. The Unmarried
Parent Worker can assist you in this regard.
Q: Do you offer financial services as part
of your program?
A: No, this program is not a financial service.
We are able to direct you to the resources available. However, all services
provided to our clients through the Unmarried Parent Program are free of charge.
