Calgary and Area Child and Family Services Authority offers a new type of
service to families where there are reported concerns about a child’s
well-being. Family Enhancement Services are short-term, voluntary, and focus on
the family’s strengths and resources.
Eligibility
Children’s Services receives reports of concerns about children’s
well-being. In many cases Family Enhancement Services may be offered. To receive
these services parents must agree to participate in a Family Assessment.
Next Steps
After a call is received, a Family Enhancement worker will contact your
family to determine if you wish to participate in a voluntary Family Assessment.
If you agree, the worker meets with you to discuss the concerns about your
child(ren), the resources your family has available to help, and any services
you think would help. If the assessment shows that your family could be helped
with services, then a plan to obtain these services will be developed with you.
If the assessment determines that your child(ren)’s needs will be better
addressed through child protective services, the Family Enhancement Worker, by
law, is required to make a referral.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q:What is the difference between Family
Enhancement Services and Core Protection Services?
A: Family Enhancement Services are
voluntary, start with a Family Assessment, and focus on finding solutions and
strengthening families. Core Protection Services start with an investigation,
may not be voluntary, and focus on protecting the child’s safety..
Q:A worker called me about participating in
a Family Assessment, but I disagree. What happens next?
A: We cannot do the assessment without having your
cooperation. If you do not want to proceed with a Family Assessment, then child
protective services may be necessary to assure your child’s safety.
Q: What is a Family Enhancement worker?
A: Family Enhancement workers are social workers
employed by Calgary and Area Child and Family Services. Family Enhancement
workers specialize in working with family’s strengths to solve problems.
