- Negative Motivation
The use of guilt, shaming, name-calling, fear of punishment or belittling
robs the child of self respect.
- Overdoing
Doing for the child what they can do for themselves, solving their problems
for them, talking for them, making decisions for them, or pampering
them leaves the child feeling that they are incapable.
- Demanding
Focusing on the negative, setting parental expectations too high, giving the
child too much responsibility, not allowing them to be children leaves them
feeling inadequate.
- Discounting
Not having time for the child, not asking their opinion, not valuing their
contribution to the family, denying their feelings leaves the child feeling
worthless.
- Permissiveness
Giving in to the child's demands, not setting or enforcing limits, letting
them treat people or property disrespectfully leaves the child feeling
insecure and confused.
